On November 11th, The Unrehearsed Shakespeare Company presents a staged reading of Countess Bathory: an Elizabethan-style history play.
Elizabeth Bathory, “The Blood Countess,” was a sixteenth-century Hungarian noblewoman, often labeled ‘the most prolific serial-killer in human history’ (though she was never put on trial, and thus never convicted of her alleged crimes). Terrified peasants, vengeful clergy, and monetarily-motivated nobility have all accused her of abusing and killing her serving-girls, and later young noblewomen. She was accused of all manner of witchcraft and wickedness, even going so far as to bathe in the blood of her victims, to stay youthful.
